Name: Trance
History: In the beginning of electronic music, a track
was often a mixture of all kinds of styles, mainly
because there wasent no rules or style
definitions at that time. To them electronic music
was just rave, but through 92, 93, 94 the tracks
and the musicians got so specialized, that it was
impossible to place all rave tracks in the same
style. One of the new styles that emerged about
that time was trance.
Sound: As the word indicates, the trance music brings
the listerner into a state of trance. Trance is
a state where you are in peace with your self,
a state where you have cleared all thoughts from
your mind, a state where you are repeating things
or movements without thinking about it. Because of
this the trance music can be heard at 2 levels.
You can use is when you are relaxing or meditating
but you can allso use it to get into a trance state
induced by your own movements if the music is
played loud, in a big dark room with a lot of other
moving people. The sound of trance is therefore
kind of sleepy with monotome beats accompanied by
up to 3 to 5 long themes, witch ofcoz results in a
very long running time. A classic trance track
startes at the bottom with the bas or melodic
strings, after a few patterns the drums appear.
The track continues to build up, until a climax
is reached. At this climax the drums is turned of
for a few patterns, where a voice sample is
heard telling you something about the universe,
aliens or other interresting stuf. After this
the track builds down to the bottom again
where it ends or starts on the development towards
a new climax.
Instruments: The instruments in trance is made with
analogus instruments (synths), and therefore
you'll often hear strings and sweeps in trance.
Beats: the beat is fast 140-180 bpm "4onTheFloor"
rythmes, that is repeating itself endlessly
with very little variation. This is because the
beat in trance is not meant to be heard, its
only purpose is to keep people moving.

Subgenres:
-Hardtrance: As the word implements hardtrance
is a hard version of trance. This means first
of all that the beats are very hard, with
hardcore like Bassdrums without noise. The beat
is allso more infront of the music, because
hardtrance dosent have that many themes and they
are not that variated as normal trance.
Today the gloryous times of hardtrance has ended
but in some way it has survied and is living on
inside goatrance or psychedelic trance.

-Goatrance/psychedelictrance: This is a kind of
trance that is inspired by the asian kultures,
mainly from a place called Goa in india. The
world of goatrance is totaly overfloted with
indian Gods, indian symboles, and colourfull
indian pictures, but it is not the indians
themself that are making the music, as some would
think. It's made by people from Europe and Israel,
and each summer these people travel to Goa with
other musicians and goaheads, to party on the
beaches while listening to psychedelictrance.
Some say that goatrance was started by old
hippies that had moved to india. I dont know if
that is true, but its a fact that goatrance has a
lot incommon with the psychedelic music of the
sixties. The goatrance enviroment is often filled
with LSD,extacy and psychedlic mushrooms, and the
sound of the music is often wicked and psychedlic
with people laughing or mumbling, and wird noises
sounds, or echoing instruments that is filtered
up and down. On top of this a hard beat and a very
characteristic sh-100 bas is placed. After some
patterns the themes begin to take shape. They are
too filtered up and down in resonance, cutoff or
other filters, witch gives the music the final
kick toward a psychedelic state of mind. The
goa music is often allso filled with people
talking about aliens and UFO's or other
wird phenomenons.
The sound of goatrance depends on witch part of
the world the musician is comming from.
Forinstance the goa musicians form Isreal are
making a very melodic kind of goatrance with
many changing, while musicians from europe are
producing a more hard, abstract and strange sound.
So if you are new to goatrance, it's often best to
start with israelic goatrance.
In the past years there has been a tendency
towards removing the themes, making the goatrance
sounding very hard and without the final kick
towards a psychedelic state.
Today goatrance is one of the biggest and most
succesfull subgenres in trance.
